Were the establishment of Latin settlements in the Levant an inevitable result of the First Crusade? As Thomas Schellhammer explains, the motivations of the early crusaders, the personalities of the crusade's leadership, and the extraordinary events of the expedition all had a role to play.

An absolutely fascinating talk. Very well written and delivered. As a former Army officer the logistics of such an expedition, which ranged far into hostile territory for a long period of time, interest me. Do you know how the expedition sustained itself?

Dear Michael, thanks very much for your comment and your interest in our podcast series. Your question about the logistical challenges of the First Crusade is a great one. Given the limitations of our sources it is very difficult to answer or even to know where to start looking for answers, but in 2002 a group of historians gathered in Sydney, Australia to address precisely this question. Their findings were published in a book entitled "Logistics of Warfare in the Age of the Crusades" and I would strongly recommend the opening essay by Professor John Pryor, host of the conference, who deals squarely with the First Crusade.
